Demo Mode

Entry 098 for Monday July 20, 2020

The core questions:

  1. What did you do today? Recorded and released two videos to advertise/explain #OpenFlip; went shopping for supplies and flowers to have the house ready for family returning today; I missed Audrey Watter’s talk with Paul Prinsloo, follow this link for Audrey’s post with her talk in text form; #educoffee with Andrea, Miguel, and Kieran; weekly discussion with other #TC1028 summer faculty; our #TC1028 class which was more me in demo mode; family arrived home; a chat with my student Fernando who is looking into graduate school options.
  2. What did you enjoy? #Educoffee was particularly reflective about our roles as educators and the role many of us take on to be the voices for other faculty who may be afraid to speak out.
  3. What did you find difficult? That #TC1028 class was really quiet. Summer groups tend to be an extreme mix of students with different situations (all semesters are but I think summer more so), and it was clear that many had not done the prior work (reading/watching about Python lists). So I went into demo mode. I do think that mode is helpful sometimes but want to push students to at least understand that it is very inefficient fo them in my opinion.
  4. What has changed? Family is home after a week by myself with the pets.
