Start me Up

This is the first year in a long time that my main academic/work goal has changed. I’ve officially abandoned finishing my Ph.D. and am continuing to focus on other projects.

Plans for the New Year

Family First

On the personal side of things I have tasked myself to communicate more with my family. The introvert in me tends to leave many important words unsaid because I think they are obvious and not contributing to a conversation. I’ve learned that in order to listen to my family (and anyone) that I need to let them know I am ready to listen. My family deserves more of my time so that is goal number one.

Flipping Evangelist

On the professional side, I have been implementing a Flipped Classroom (see posts here, here, here and here) for two years now and have given four introductory sessions to Flipping Classrooms here at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara. This led to my push to evangelize improving other teachers’ classrooms here as well as across our entire Tec system and farther through my Flipped Classroom Mexico Facebook page. This is my main professional focus this year.

Social Network of Learning

I had the good fortune to attend our yearly academic conference on innovation in educational technology in December for the second time and converse deeply with many great educators there including Jonathan Bergmann and Marc Prensky. Networking with other educators is important for my own development and those of my colleagues; learning is a social process and I will continue to expand my personal learning network in 2014.

Writing Often

I started writing here on this blog in a more regular fashion in 2013 and plan to write “almost daily” in 2014.  The focus will continue to be teaching and technology but I am looking at writing more about some other topics either in this blog or creating a separate one. I put a big focus on health over the past two years and have tried not to be vocal about that with my family and friends. Despite not pushing my thoughts on that, I have had various friends and family ask me about what I am doing in that area. It has led to this post and perhaps will lead to more. I am thankful to others that are blogging often, they have inspired me to write more. So thanks to Mark, Alfred and John for their posts over the last year.

What are your goals for 2014?

That’s just a few of the items on my list for 2014, what about you? Let me know in the comments section below.
