Education Surveillance

Entry 451 for Thursday July 8, 2021

The core questions:

Credit goes to Ben and readers of his blog for these “Four Questions” and the five stretch questions.

  1. What did you do today? More sessions (as attendee) of the RNP including keynote by Julia Freeland Fisher and a workshop on use of Twitter and TikTok in the classroom; session on Twitter after engaging with a spam email received from an education surveillance vendor; last presentation of project proposal for MCY by Yue; final session of our #TC4024 Cybersecurity Intelligence course.
  2. What did you enjoy? Another good keynote by Julia and session by Ana at the RNP.
  3. What did you find difficult? I pulled myself into a conversation about surveillance by edtech companies which was frustrating but at least remained civil. I remain convinced that webcam surveillance and “proctoring” is just plain bad. Thanks to colleagues for affirming that for me.
  4. What has changed? Definitely not my mind on surveillance in education.
